It Started With a Proposal
Years ago, when I was applying to PhD programs in organic chemistry, I did not have the kind of academic record or experience that naturally stood out on paper. But I believed there was more to show than what could be captured by credentials alone.
So instead of letting my background define my possibilities, I developed my own research ideas around the work of different professors and turned those ideas into tailored research proposals.
Those proposals changed the conversation. They gave professors a way to see how I thought as a scientist—not just where I had studied or what grades I had received. That led to interviews, offers, scholarships, and ultimately the opportunity to pursue my PhD abroad.
Years later, the same approach opened another door: a postdoctoral research opportunity that became part of a much longer scientific journey across countries, institutions, and eventually industry.
Sometimes the opportunity comes when someone can see beyond your credentials and recognize what you may be capable of.
